Dear Yvonne,
Normally, a preschooler can handle to learn more than one language at the same time. So, firstly, don't blame yourself. What u need to do is to offer additional help.
'What language should I talk to him?'
Language is a tool for communication. So, we should choose practically and functionally.
You cannot stop him learning Mandarin and English as it is the language environment in Singapore.
On the other hand, it seems difficult to create an entire Mandarin and English environment at home due to the reality that u are not competent in these languages. And even u speak Mandarin or English at home, u will talk to your husband in Cantonese!
Then, what should you do?
Make the environment 'easier' for your son to learn 'multiple languages'.
The guideline is: please don't swop between two languages in 'a sentence', in 'the same period of time', in the same environment, or even in oneself.
You may arrange in this way:
Parents use Cantonese with the child and teacher use English with him.
The child learns Cantonese at home and learns English at school.
Then, it will be easier for the child to generate language rules and minimize confusion between languages.
Moreover, you also need to monitor the child's performance. Please noted that the child's confusion between languages may not be due to the environment. He may have his own problem in learning language, like language disorder.
So, I recommend u to consult a speech therapist in Singapore. After a full assessment, u will have a clear direction to manage your child's problem.
